  • The Myth of the Submarine that Passed thru the Canal

    • If you've heard the tall tale of the submarine that passed thru the Hennepin Canal , you probably dismissed it immediately as impossible.  But like all tall tales, this one has a grain of truth in it. (For the rest of the story ...)

  • A Never Ending Job

    • For most of it's 100 + miles, the Hennepin Canal is actually two parallel dams that contain water taken from the Rock River. The water held by these two dams, or levies, becomes a long "boat path" that we call a canal. For one hundred years, the canal water has constantly tried to break out of those levies. And, for one hundred years, it has been someone's responsibility to keep the levies in repair so that the water doesn't break out.  (For the rest of the story ...)

  • News from the Superintendent

    • Recently a young man from over in the Quad Cities area approached me with a proposal. Michael Schmidt had used the Canal on different occasions for various purposes; most of the time his experiences were part of his involvement with Boy Scout Troop 383. He had a tremendous respect for the out of doors and a fondness of the Canal, and he wanted to give something back. The old lift bridge #40 over Lock 26 needed some attention. One of only 3 such structures along the entire 96 mile Canal corridor, the historic bridge was heavily graffittied and really was somewhat of an eyesore. Years of paint can messaging had left it multicolored with all kinds of words, phrases and drawings. It needed a good paint job; a facelift so to speak.  (For the rest of the story ...)

  • Annual Meeting

    • The Annual Meeting has been scheduled for OCTOBER 29, 2006 at 3:00 pm at the VISITOR'S CENTER, just outside of Sheffield.  There will be a FREE Canal Fresh Fish Fry.  Agenda includes: election of executive board, annual reports, discussion of the "Year of the Centennial", and input from members.  We would like to see you there!

  • Friends to Participate in National Trails Symposium

    • The American Trails organization will hold its National Trails Symposium, October 19 - 22, 2006 in the Quad City area, beginning at the River Center in downtown Davenport. Activities will include speakers, field trips, exhibits, banquets, riverboat rides, bicycle rides, seminars and, hopefully some good parties. Superintendent Moser, with Friends as support, will lead a bus tour explaining history and function of the many points of interest along the historic Hennepin Canal. For information, Email: Symposium@Americantrails.org or call 530-547-2060

He will meet this fall with Steve Moser at the Visitor's Center to begin gathering production notes and script material. As work progresses, Wanderings will keep its readers posted.
